Members of the Citizens' Front for the Defense of Water and Life delivered a letter addressed to President Claudia Sheinbaum during her visit to La Paz, Baja California Sur, to request a hearing and explain the situation that, for months, they have been reporting in the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve.
The organization points out helicopter flights, the transfer and permanence of materials and activities related to projects promoted within the Protected Natural Area.
Juan Ángel Trasviña, a member of the Citizens' Front for the Defense of Water and Life, stated that there are complaints to the authorities and questioned that until now there has been no action against those who, he said, have carried out activities that affect the reserve.
“Yes, there are complaints, but this reeks of corruption. I'm not saying it smells, it stinks of corruption,” he said.
Damages reported in San Miguelito
Trasviña noted that the Front has reported damage to trees, cacti and species considered to be in some protection category on the San Miguelito property.
“Those who knocked down thousands of trees and cacti, species, some of the species considered endangered on the San Miguelito property, did absolutely nothing to them,” he said.
The member of the Front also questioned the actions of the authorities in response to the complaints submitted.
“Complaints have been filed and they have done absolutely nothing,” he said.
Helicopter flights questioned
Another sign is related to helicopter flights carried out in the Sierra La Laguna.
Trasviña stated that these types of flights are prohibited within the reserve, except when it is an emergency, and noted that the operations affect flora and fauna.
“Helicopter flights are prohibited unless it's an emergency. Helicopter flights are prohibited in the Sierra de la Laguna because they cause a series of damages including damage to flora and fauna,” he said.
The use of helicopters was also addressed during the public information meeting held on September 1 in La Paz, corresponding to the project “Integral Restoration of Facilities for the Preservation and Monitoring of the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve”.
During that meeting, the transfer of materials by helicopter and the permanence of part of them in the area were questioned.
The Front asks for an audience with Sheinbaum
During the presidential visit on September 20, members of the Front handed the letter to Claudia Sheinbaum.
Ramona Avilés Gómez, a member of the Front, who delivered the document directly to the president, said that she let Sheinbaum know that the Sierra La Laguna is under threat and that the president replied that she would review the document.
They stated that the actions reported involve breaches of legal provisions and pointed to authorities at all three levels of government.
“They are violating the law from the federal, state and municipal levels,” they said.
Sierra La Laguna and the water of La Paz and Los Cabos
The Sierra La Laguna is classified as a Biosphere Reserve and is a Protected Natural Area located between the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos.
The National Commission for Protected Natural Areas has pointed out the importance of this reserve for the collection, retention and distribution of water in Baja California Sur.
The Citizens' Front for the Defense of Water and Life maintains that the protection of the Sierra is directly related to the supply of water for La Paz and Los Cabos.
On September 15, a point of agreement on the issue was presented to the Standing Committee on Ecology, Environment and Natural Resources of the Congress of Baja California Sur, while the call approved by the Plenary on May 7 is part of the legislative record on complaints related to the Sierra.
The Front is now awaiting a response to the request for a hearing delivered during President Claudia Sheinbaum's visit to Baja California Sur.
