Fires in Protected Natural Areas (ANP) increased 84% in the first four months of this year, according to data from the National Forestry Commission (Conafor).
Between January 1 and April 22, 42,281 hectares of fire broke out in Mexico within ANP. The size of the area that has been on fire is equivalent to that of the city of Toluca and almost doubles the 22,928 hectares burned within ANP in the same period in 2020.
The ANP most affected this year were Cumbres de Monterrey in Nuevo León; La Sepultura in Chiapas; and the Feeding Basin of the National Irrigation District 043 State of Nayarit, while at the same time of year the most affected were the Laguna de Términos in Campeche, Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl in Edomex and La Encrucijada in Chiapas.
