Yucatan fishermen hope that federal support for the Fishermen and Aquaculture Welfare Support program (Bienesca) will come during the grouper ban that ends on March 31.

The ban that began on February 1 for the protection of 18 grouper species off the coast of Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and its borders with Veracruz, also represents a challenge for the economies of local fishermen.

Although, Yucatán has already started with the delivery of pantry vouchers for the 2021 Respect for the Veda program, a total amount of 4,800 pesos in vouchers in two months, these deliveries will not be enough to serve fishermen who have been affected by the pandemic, closure of foreign markets and climate shocks, in the last year, explained José Luis Carrillo, president of the Regional Federation of Fishing Cooperatives of the Center and Westeros.
