With the motto “eat rich, eat healthy, eat Mexican fish and seafood”, the Secretariat of Economic Development of Mexico City and the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (Comeesca) signed a collaboration agreement with the purpose of disseminating sustainable consumption.

“It's a campaign, an outreach, for Mexican families to consume directly, not with third parties, but to bring Mexican fish to their kitchen... and also an information campaign on why it should be consumed with high nutritional value... “, explained Fadlala Akabani, Secretary of Economic Development of Mexico City.

According to the secretary, the agreement with Comeesca seeks to maintain the habit of responsible and sustainable consumption among residents of the Mexican capital to strengthen health, improve diet and, at the same time, support Mexican fish producers.

On average, it is estimated that only 14% of the fish diet of each Mexican corresponds to domestic production, but it could increase to 50%, following the fishing seasons.

“The importance of the market has been talked about and the need for consumption is there. We have a per capital consumption of around 14.5 kilos per year, which is less than the 20 kilos recommended by FAO, but in this metropolis there are more people who can consume and make it part of their diet,” said Luis Bourillón, spokesperson for sustainability at Comeesca and general director of Collective Impact.

However, he stressed that one of the challenges is to avoid overexploitation of species, which could be reversed if the population had the tools to learn about the fishing sector, its multiple species for consumption, sustainability plans, and others.

The agreement is signed before the peak of consumption due to the Holy Week festivities.

According to Akabani, the outreach project is still under construction. The next step will be through the Wellness Fairs, where information will be sought to increase the presence of fish and seafood that comes from Mexican suppliers.

For its part, the event also promoted Pesca con Futuro, a Comeesca campaign that emerged since 2017 focused on consumption from a sustainable perspective.

One of its main achievements has been to link different actors in the value chain in order to achieve informed, responsible and even lower purchases.
