While legislators and authorities were considering the possibility that fisheries inspection and surveillance operations will be completely transferred to the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the insurance of illegal fishing products in which this agency participated grew by 9.15% in annual comparison in 2020.

Thus, in 2020, the Coast Guard insured 5,316 kilograms of marine species, exceeding 4,870 in 2019. The Navy's results last year are the highest since 2017, according to official data obtained through transparency by Causa Natura.

These are fishery products that were insured by Semar in its supporting role with other agencies such as the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca), the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and the Attorney General's Office (FGR).

In 2020, the products most insured by Semar for illegal fishing were octopus, with 2,500 kilograms seized; scale, 1,300 kilograms; and Camarón, 688 kilograms.

The list of seized products has changed, since in 2019 clam insurance topped the list with 2,455 kilograms; totoaba, 1,175 kilograms; and octopus ranked third with 642 kilograms.

Despite the increase in insurance registered in 2020, it is worth saying that, in the last six years, Semar reached its peak in 2016, when it seized 8,932 kilograms of various products.
