The role of the National Institute for Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) in ensuring the transparency of various agencies has been key in the last two decades, experts say . However, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's new attack against autonomous bodies has put progress in this area on hold.
López Obrador has pointed out to the INAI that it has flaws, accusing it of being very expensive, ineffective and, more recently, of having functions that could be replaced by other institutions, within the federal administration, such as the Secretariat of Public Administration (SFP). The president's actions have transcended statements, considering a bill to eliminate INAI and other autonomous bodies.
