After 100 days of protest, with the installation of a sit-in at the entrances of the Proman Group, Gas and Petrochemistry of the West (GPO) ammonia plant, in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, the organization Greenpeace Mexico demonstrated in the Zócalo in Mexico City to ask President Claudia Sheinbaum to cancel the project.
As part of the protest, 20 Greenpeace activists, including two trained climbers, placed a canvas on the flagpole with the message: “President: Protect Topolobampo”.
They also displayed another sign on the floor of the first painting of the city with the caption “Not in Mexico!”
When questioned about the subject during her morning conference, the president said that, although the plant is already making progress, a consultation is being carried out with the population.
“At the time, with President López Obrador, who began construction of the plant, a public consultation was held with the communities in the area, and the consultation voted yes,” said Sheinbaum.
The president assured that the population's dissatisfaction arose because the company made commitments that have not been fulfilled, but also because of the risks of pollution in Ohuira Bay
“Work is being done to comply with them. There are others that have to do with pollution in the area, which already exists, what is sought is that the lagoon is guaranteed that it will not be contaminated,” he said.

“Nothing by force, all for reason and we are going to wait for this work in the meetings and the company that installed the plant complies with the communities and there are no impacts on the area,” he added.
The native Mayo-Yoreme people are opposed to the project because the plant will be able to produce 2,200 metric tons of ammonia per day, which represents a risk to the ecosystem and health.
“If the project continues, the mega-plant will bring irreversible and irreparable damage, not only to the environment: to ecosystems, habitats, flora and fauna in the region; but also to the ways of life of the communities that have lived in and around Ohuira Bay for years.”
“It is time for the authorities to assume their competence in the matter, mainly the Executive, headed by Dr. Sheinbaum Pardo, and to act for the defense and protection of this space, to stop and permanently cancel the project before the impacts on its construction and subsequent operation deepen,” said Aleira Lara, Executive Director of Greenpeace Mexico.
