The first month of 2022 has passed and this beginning of the year has made us realize that the pandemic is still there, governing a large part of our lives almost two years after it began. Added to this is the difficult time the country is going through: an adverse economic context, a polarized political climate and the insecurity that affects a large part of society. At the same time that we have this context, we see with concern that the country continues to deteriorate natural resources, affecting more those who depend on them for their livelihoods, whether indigenous communities, forest ejados or fishermen.
Causa Natura's response to the current moment has been to redouble efforts and work harder every day, seeking scientific rigor, without ideological positions and always thinking about the good of society.
Our work is aimed at achieving a better management of our resources and environment considering the different social groups. We have implemented the same actions to help the park ranger who needs to know where management problems may occur in marine areas; and for the businessman who wants to identify better suppliers with good fishing practices, or for the ordinary citizen who is involved in the events of their environment.
However, we recognize that this is not enough. In particular, we cannot remain indifferent to the deterioration of the conditions for expressing, discussing and seeking ways to solve environmental problems, in interaction with authorities and in the spaces for dialogue and the search for agreements that exist in the public arena.
We see, on the one hand, an increase in aggressions against environmental rights defenders, while, on the other, as the highest political leadership comes to stigmatize the work of environmentalists and civil organizations that work in this area.
Discussions about improvements to the environmental situation and respect for the legal framework and human rights suffer from the deterioration of the value of evidence and reason and instead promote the disqualification of the contrary based on assumptions and ideologies. It is necessary to address this with more spaces that allow a greater dissemination of plural visions and of all the voices that exist in the different problems, with discussions that privilege mutual respect, the use of information and evidence as a framework for reaching agreements on differences.
That is why at the present time we will reinforce our CN Media and CN Journalism initiatives, which include focusing on government work, as well as looking at citizens, businessmen, CSOs, academics and environmental defenders who try to move forward and push for small and big changes every day. We have already celebrated one year since we started this space for communication and independent journalism. In this past time, we have seen the importance of having a space for discussion and for the dissemination of information, analysis and journalistic coverage that allows us to address issues that would not otherwise receive the attention of traditional media and that we hope will help to generate more plural spaces for discussion that are very necessary at this time.
Although our contribution may be very modest given the problems we face, we believe that it is important to take these steps. We want to show that we will be there to help, to avoid indifference to those who struggle and even run great risks to achieve a Mexico that also includes its nature, its biodiversity, and a more just and prosperous society. We will contribute with our work to propose solutions and also to make visible the problems, injustices and challenges we face. Those who work on this are not alone and there are many of us who seek to change and improve the country in which we live.
