Illegal fishing is a phenomenon that occurs globally and that affects both ecosystems and the people who engage in this activity. According to the United Nations, one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of global fisheries resources is unreported and unregulated illegal fishing (IUU). [1] In Mexico, faced with the crisis caused by the pandemic that hinders actions in this area, the lack of budget and the persistent problem of illegality that exists both in fishing and in other sectors, the picture is disappointing.

With this objective, the update of the Fisheries Inspection and Surveillance Effectiveness Index for the year 2020 and the period between January and May 2021 is presented.
