In addition to the figures for estimating the production and wealth of a country in a given period (such as Gross Domestic Product, GDP, or productivity indices), it is urgent that the economy also consider other tools that measure progress understood as the capacity and interest of a nation to maintain the good health of its natural reserves 1.
Unfortunately, the state of ocean health in Mexico is quite worrying: sea pollution, illegal and incidental fishing, overfishing, lack of regulation and surveillance, the abandonment of the fishing and aquaculture sector, and the dependence on subsidies that increase fishing effort have pushed the exploitation of various fisheries to the limit of what is permissible.
This unsustainable behavior mainly affects vulnerable fishing communities, and deepens the chronic problem of poverty and inequality that has plagued the fishing sector for six years. Among other public policy measures, the government is required to accelerate the shift in strategy and increase support to encourage the production of small coastal fishermen through subsidies considered beneficial or positive.
