The oceans are the engine that drives many of the global processes that make planet Earth a place that allows our existence. The oceans connect us and give us food, water, oxygen, rain, fertilizer and even regulate our temperature. Covering 70% of our planet, caring for the planet means taking care of our oceans.
Nowadays we know that we are deteriorating them at a rate that will end up affecting us permanently. We are contaminating them with our garbage and taking more from them than they can give us. Affecting them through our contamination or extraction of species is having a negative impact on their ecosystems and on the global processes to which they contribute.
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are one of the ways we can take care of the state of our oceans. These are marine areas where there are strong regulations to reduce overfishing and pollution. These may exist in national or international waters, with countries responsible for implementing these regulations.
