77% of young people aged 16 to 24 and 80% between 25 and 39 years old show a high interest in collective action and digital activism on environmental issues, according to the survey Citizen Preferences on the Environment conducted by Causa Natura Center.
The objective of the census was to understand how citizens perceive environmental problems and what actions they are willing to take to contribute to their solution.
Of the 3,670 people digitally surveyed in Mexico, 69% have expressed their environmental activism by signing petitions for digital platforms, participating in protests or reporting through social networks; followed by 61% who have volunteered in civil society organizations.
Among the results, it stands out that only 32% of the people surveyed have brought their concerns directly to the authorities. Most of them belong to the group over 40 years old (69%).
“The results show that citizens are increasingly concerned about the environment, but with significant gaps between awareness and action. While protests, petitions and social networks are the most used channels for expressing discontent, contact with authorities remains low... suggesting a gap in political advocacy,” the report states.
The states that lead in environmental actions at the national level, from signing petitions to political advocacy and community work, are Baja California Sur (84%), Mexico City (79%) and Querétaro (77%).
The results also show that the main environmental concerns of citizens are deforestation (24%), climate change (18.3%) and the overexploitation of natural resources (14.6%).
In general terms, 71% of respondents think that the quality of the environment has worsened in the last five years.
Most people consider that the most effective measures to solve environmental problems are fines, stricter regulations and a change in the way we consume. Asked about their identification with environmentalists, 32% answered that they consider it strongly, while at the opposite extreme 5% answered that “not at all”.
In addition, according to the people surveyed, the actors with the least credibility to lead the environmental fight are municipal and state governments; at the same time, they consider that civil society organizations are the main engines of environmental action; to the extent that 61% of the respondents have sought support from them.
