Xóchitl Gálvez's team proposes that Pemex and CFE assume their environmental responsibility

Rodolfo Lacy, coordinator of the environment and climate change panel of the Strength and Heart for Mexico Coalition, spoke in an interview with Causa Natura Media about the need to repair the impacts of fossil industries and the protection of land defenders.

“It's not possible to grow sustainably if we have pollution from the industry. It is not possible to have a government that pollutes and destroys the environment with a people who are sick and affected by this pollution,” said Rodolfo Lacy, coordinator of the environment and climate change board of the Strength and Heart Coalition for Mexico, in an interview with Causa Natura Media.

Lacy attended the “Presidential Dialogues” event, organized by WRI Mexico, representing candidate Xóchitl Gálvez. Also present was the rest of the team, consisting of Fernando Galindo, coordinator of the public finance board; Rosanety Barrios, coordinator of the energy board; and Roberto Remes, coordinator of the innovation and cities board.

The intention of the dialogues is for presidential candidates to sign WRI Mexico's Pact for a Sustainable Revolution, as a commitment to developing an economy that prioritizes investing in sectors with a low environmental footprint. So far, only the teams of candidate Xóchitl Gálvez and candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez have presented themselves, while the platform of candidate Claudia Sheinbaum is scheduled for Friday, April 19.

“I think that the first and most important thing in our approach is for State companies to assume their environmental responsibility. State companies must be modernized so that they really have environmental improvement plans that are true, that are not greenwashing, that are not just getting credit or trying to simulate that there is environmental protection in the industry,” Lacy told CN Media.

This is in response to the question of how to deal with health problems related to the effects of climate change. An axis that has had little space in the proposals of the people running for president, according to a published analysis by the Resilient Mexico coalition, made up of more than 30 civil society organizations.

When questioned about the measures being proposed for communities that have already faced an environmental impact, such as the inhabitants of production areas such as Tula, Hidalgo, or Paraíso, Tabasco, the coordinator only said that sanitation will be required, without going into further details.

“If you eliminate pollution, what we can do later is to clean up these communities, restore their affected ecosystems and ensure that these communities develop, as the Constitution says, in a healthy environment,” he replied.

Also, during his participation in the event, the coordinator promised to generate zero emissions by 2050, should Xóchitl Gálvez win the presidential elections.

Regarding the protection of seas and coasts, which has also been a neglected issue in the proposals, Rodolfo Lacy stated that there are plans for the fishing sector.

“The Ocean agenda must also be sustainable. I believe that there are subsidies that are pernicious, they are against sustainable management of the fishery resource. We must support, as our candidate said, the agricultural sector, the forestry sector and the fishing sector that have been abandoned by this government,” she said.
