Mexicans have the intention and will to consume marine products that come from sustainable fishing processes. This is revealed by the study “Perception of fish and seafood consumption in Mexico 2022”.

The report, prepared by the international consultancy firm GlobeScan, in conjunction with the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (Comeesca), points out that there is a growing need among Mexicans to undertake personal consumer actions that are friendly to ecosystems and species.

According to the survey, applied to a thousand people in 16 cities in the country, 30% of people have switched to buying products that claim to protect the oceans and fish, while 38% are willing to do so in the future.

The trend of consumption that follows the strictest environmental standards also goes hand in hand with a growing demand for fish and seafood.

Among those surveyed, 55% of people indicated that they consume more seafood than they did five years ago.

This path towards more responsible consumption is mainly led by younger people, who show greater concern for their ecological footprint.

The survey highlights that 86% of people want to protect fish and seafood so that boys and girls can enjoy them in the future; they also want to have more information to be sure that they are not buying unsustainable products.

In addition, 83% said they want to know that the fish they are buying can be traced to a known and trusted source.

This is linked to another revealing fact of the study: climate change is one of the main concerns of all the profiles interviewed, men and women of all ages and from different cities in the country, including coastal cities.

However, there is still a wide margin of ignorance in the market about eco-labels, since 41% have never heard of them, while only 17% buy frequently based on them.

Despite this, 78% think that such ecolabels increase trust in commercial brands. 73% believe that buying eco-labeled products contributes to conservation for future generations.

The main reasons Mexicans buy seafood is because they are good for their health, followed by freshness and flavor. It also matters that there is respect for the environment and they are easy to cook.

The consumption figure several times a week increases among people with high economic status, and it is mainly done at home.

Shrimp is the preferred marine product. In second place is tuna, although it is not specified in what presentation, then salmon and tilapia.

According to the study, the supermarket is the main selling point for seafood and fish. It is followed by fish markets and then restaurants.

According to GlobeScan, there is room to improve Mexicans' relationship with seafood, as many of them are not yet used to eating it.
